Chapter 11

Cordelia walked me deep into the castle, leading me up a flight of stairs to an arched, solid wooden door. It swung open before she could even knock.

Cordelia was still smiling, but now her smile looked forced. “Tasar, are you here?” she called out softly.

A man—Tasar, presumably—appeared in the doorway, his hands braced against the sides of it. His brown eyes bored into me. He was thin and tall, with white hair and a tattoo of a band around his neck.

“Is that her?” Tasar whispered.

“Tasar!” Cordelia’s voice was jarringly stern. “Is she here? Did you tell her?”

Tasar nodded, pulling his eyes away from me. “I—I told her. I told her just as soon as I got word that you wanted to do the test. She didn’t answer my first message, so I kept sending them. She finally replied a minute ago—she told me she’d end her vacation when the gods came down and dragged her away.”

Cordelia let out a deep breath.

“I know what to do,” Tasar assured her.

Cordelia ever so slightly nodded before looking back at me. “I will leave you alone in the very…capable hands of Tasar.”

“I’d feel better if you sounded more believable,” I couldn’t help saying.

She just nodded again and retreated down the steps.

Panic rippled through me as Tasar motioned me into the room. Even though I was pretty sure I could bolt down the stairs and outrun him, I didn’t want to spend my entire life running away. I’d done enough of that already.

I took a deep breath and walked past Tasar. Unlike the other rooms I’d seen, this one was small and cluttered. Tables were stacked with books, various liquids, and glass cylinders, and one wall was completely covered with bookshelves that were halfway filled. Plants stood before two large windows that had three metal bars running horizontally across them. I didn’t find those bars comforting.

“Eventually, I’ll possess every healing book in the world.” I jumped at the sound of Tasar’s voice and quickly turned around. “Sorry—I didn’t mean to scare you,” he apologized.

I sighed. “It’s fine. I just… I just want to get this over with.”

He pointed to a chair by the table. “Have a seat. I’ll prepare what we need.” He proceeded to scrounge around the room, holding a piece of paper in his hand and mumbling under his breath. Eventually, he walked back to me with a vial of a red liquid, a rolled-up piece of paper, and a small knife. He set everything on the table and looked up at me. “I know this looks worrying, but it’s not too bad, I promise.”

“Then why do you have a weapon?” I looked at the knife.

Tasar chuckled. “It’s barely going to hurt. We took samples of the King’s and Queen’s blood and spellbound them together. I’m going to dip one end of the enchanted parchment in their combined blood and dab a few drops of your blood on the other end. If you are in fact their daughter, the blood will merge. If you’re not, the paper will explode.
